Traditional Monetary Gifts at Weddings

A common tradition in many cultures is to give money as a wedding gift, and it's no different in Germany. According to a 2020 survey by Statista, 93% of bridal couples received money as a wedding gift (the second most popular gift was vouchers, by the way). And why not? This allows the couple to fulfill their own wishes or take it directly on their honeymoon to spend at the pool bar.

There are various ways to give money at a wedding. A popular option is to present the cash in a beautiful envelope. This adds a personal touch to the gift and shows the couple that you've put thought into it.

Another trend with monetary gifts is to present the money in a creative way. For example, you can hide the cash in a decorative box or transform it into folded origami artworks. These original ideas make the gift something special and provide a surprise for the couple. I've compiled 5 creative ideas for packaging monetary gifts here. Average Monetary Gifts in Different Cultures

In some cultures, it's customary to give large sums of money as wedding gifts, while in others, smaller amounts are typical. Here are some examples:

  • In the USA, the average amount for a wedding cash gift is between $100 and $200.

  • In some Asian cultures, like China, red envelopes with cash gifts are traditionally given. The amount varies depending on the degree of relationship to the couple.

It's important to note that these are only average values, and there can always be individual differences. It's advisable to adhere to the cultural traditions and expectations of the couple when it comes to wedding cash gifts.

How to Determine the Amount of the Cash Gift

In Germany, based on my experience, amounts range between €50 and €200. Several factors should be considered when deciding on the amount of a wedding cash gift. Here are some of the considerations:

  • Relationship to the Couple: The closer you are to the couple, the higher the gift can be. Family members and close friends tend to give more generous amounts, while distant acquaintances or colleagues often give smaller sums.

  • Financial Situation: Your own financial situation also plays a role. Only give what you can afford and don't overstretch yourself financially. The couple wants to celebrate with you and isn't inviting you because of your bank balance.

  • Regional Customs: It's important to consider regional customs and traditions. In some cultures, there are clear guidelines on how much should be given, while in others, it's more flexible.

  • Personal Preferences: Ultimately, you should rely on your personal preferences when deciding on the amount. You should feel comfortable with your contribution and give what you deem appropriate.

Remember, the wedding cash gift is a gesture of support and well-wishing. It's not just about the amount but also about the thoughts and wishes associated with it.

My Rule of Thumb for How Much Money To Give

As a Wedding Day Coordinator, I have direct insight into what a wedding costs. I'm also currently in my thirties and attend about two weddings a year. So, the topic of cash gifts comes up quite often in my daily life.

Therefore, I've established a rule of thumb for myself:

  • At least €75 per person

  • At least €150 per couple

Why? In most cases, this covers the cost of the meal. The couple is inviting all guests to eat, drink, and celebrate, and even if €75 doesn't cover the entire per-person cost, I want to contribute to a large part of it so they don't have to bear all the expenses for me.

Additionally, I like to gift a box with six different wines that the couple can open on various occasions (e.g., their first Christmas together).

This way, I'm not just giving money but also have something physical that can be nicely wrapped and brings additional joy. I add the value of this gift to the €75, especially if they're close friends or family. If I'm only invited as a +1, I wouldn't organize an additional gift.

Giving money is a totally individual and intimate matter. I'm just sharing my approach. Maybe it will work for you too!
